Kurt Steele - Meditation on God is Light

I was meditating on God today as "light". I John tells us that God is light and in Him there is no darkness. When I think of light in contrast to darkness, I imagine words like hope, guidance, peace, and security. When I ponder the word darkness, I visualize words like groping, fear, and disorientation. It makes sense because God is light and Satan is the prince of darkness. Jesus states that He is the light of the world. God calls us to be light in a dark world. Jesus points out the men love darkness rather than light because the light exposes everything. Man would rather hide their sins. As I have learned, the more my deeds are exposed in the light and forgiven by the blood of Christ, the more free I begin to walk. God is so good as He transfers us from children of darkness to children of the LIGHT. I am amazed at the wondrous glory of God that blazes with brilliance in a dark an dsinful world. We are more than conquerors. We are victorious in the light.

I read your 'Meditation on God is Light' at a very appropriate time. It's Saturday now and the Easter Vigil begins this evening. I want to tell you some of what we (me and my church) do to celebrate the occasion along with the traditions with light.

First - a bit of background. You know of my Crystal Reporting way of life. But you don't know that I have strong roots into the Music Ministry within the Catholic church. My preference is with folk music that may include instruments such as guitars, percussions, organ / piano, mandolins, etc... I sang in Folk choirs in Barrie and Toronto, Ontario; Jasper, Banff and Calgary Alberta; and also in Vancouver, British Columbia.

I have sung with choirs through the Easter Vigil service consisting of four parts: Service of Light, Liturgy of the word, Liturgy of baptism and Liturgy of the eucharist. This is by far the longest mass of the year. While not a favourite with a lot of the congregation, the liturgy of the word is my favourite part because we get to sing responsorial psalms after each of the seven readings. A normal mass would only have two readings. Back on topic: God is Light.

The Service of light begins in the dark and everyone holds an unlit candle. The large Easter candle is carried in a procession though the church to the place of the fire. The Easter candle is lit and we sing "Christ our light." R:"Thanks be to God." two times. All candles are lit from the Easter Candle and the deacon or priest sings the Easter Procalamation that ends with these words,

"...Christ, the Morning Star,
who came back from the dead,
and shed his peaceful light on all mankind,
your Son who lives and reigns for ever and ever."

R: Amen.

Due to various factors, I have not given of my talent to the Music Ministry for about six years now. It is a part of my life that is missing. I hope to see the Light some day soon.
